How Long Does It Take To Resolve Credit Reporting Dispute?

Time to Complete Credit Reporting Dispute

The credit reporting agencies have thirty days (30) to verify, resolve or delete a tradeline or item on your credit report.  If you are mailing the dispute in, then they start the clock when they receive the dispute.

The quickest that I have gotten something removed is 8 hours from submission time.  The dispute was initiated on-line and an Adobe pdf file with the documents to support were combined and uploaded.  Experian deleted the item.  Transunion and Equifax posted a status of 30 days from the day I submitted.

Also, note that while this item is being investigated, the comment section will have a notation - "Consumer disputes - investigation in progress."

If the dispute is something that can be looked up very easily like public records, then the dispute will get resolved quickly.  As an example, a lien withdrawal is posted to the court records in the county and will checked and no need to verify with the IRS, State, etc...

Disputes that involve verifying the accuracy have to be sent to the original creditor and that takes more time.

How Do I Dispute an Error on My Credit Report?

How to Dispute Credit Report Errors

You can dispute an error on your credit report by completing a dispute on-line or by writing to the credit bureaus directly.  All three of the major credit bureaus allow for also uploading supporting documentation.

I suggest that you write an explanation letter, screen grabs or scans of the incorrect information, describe what it should be and submit as a pdf.   Transunion disputes need to have your file number included in all the correspondence.

Experian, Transunion, and Equifax have 30 days to verify or remove incorrect information on your credit report so it's best to have enough evidence to support your case.

You may contact the credit bureaus at the following addresses:

Experian
P.O. Box 9701
Allen, TX 75013

TransUnion
PO Box 2000
Chester, PA 19022-2000

Equifax Information Services LLC
PO Box 740256
Atlanta, GA 30374

Welcome to Repair My Credit

Introduction to Repair My Credit

Repairing your credit takes times so the best advice is to try to not make the mistakes that lead you to bad credit.  I know that is easier said than done but what to do about it is why this blog exists.

These tips are from my own personal experience and may or may not help you solve your problems.  I had a 790, 800, and 810 credit scores from the credit reporting bureaus (CRB) a few years back but I lost my job and things got messy to say the least.  The scores after the mess, were in the 300's.  The bottom of the "do not touch" list.

So...Let's get started!
