How Long Does It Take To Resolve Credit Reporting Dispute?

Time to Complete Credit Reporting Dispute

The credit reporting agencies have thirty days (30) to verify, resolve or delete a tradeline or item on your credit report.  If you are mailing the dispute in, then they start the clock when they receive the dispute.

The quickest that I have gotten something removed is 8 hours from submission time.  The dispute was initiated on-line and an Adobe pdf file with the documents to support were combined and uploaded.  Experian deleted the item.  Transunion and Equifax posted a status of 30 days from the day I submitted.

Also, note that while this item is being investigated, the comment section will have a notation - "Consumer disputes - investigation in progress."

If the dispute is something that can be looked up very easily like public records, then the dispute will get resolved quickly.  As an example, a lien withdrawal is posted to the court records in the county and will checked and no need to verify with the IRS, State, etc...

Disputes that involve verifying the accuracy have to be sent to the original creditor and that takes more time.
